“There were a lot of rumors about who was going to die. In fact, Kevin was at one point taking all of the original (Avengers) off the board. We thought he was too aggressive and the audience wouldn’t be able to process it.”
Since this happened long before the script was written, the Russo brothers were able to convince Feige to kill off the fewest characters and thus make the most impactful sacrifices for him.
“(We thought) that choosing one or two characters to make sacrifices throughout the film could give moments throughout the film where the action stops and you have an emotional catharsis and then continue with the narrative.
Anthony Russo made it clear that Feige’s idea was in the early days of production and was left alone at a conceptual level; however, they always sought to keep the audience feeling that no character was safe.
